The story of Terrible Lizards: Dalton and Elena Coolidge, the duelling dinosaurs fossil, DJ, Dr. Fellows and the black biomass under the park.
Terrible Lizards Story Explained
Terrible Lizards tells its story the way a park tells its story: through signage, tapes, letters and rooms that were designed for visitors who are no longer there. The plot is not delivered in cutscenes. It is assembled from Dalton's recordings, Elena's correspondence and the state of the attraction.
This page puts the timeline in order and explains what the park was doing before Jordan arrived. It contains spoilers for the whole game. The ending explained page covers the final scene; this page covers the history behind it.

The park
Dalton's Dinos is a dinosaur-themed roadside attraction off Route 66 in New Mexico. It was founded by Dalton Coolidge and his wife Elena, both paleontologists, after they discovered a rare "duelling dinosaurs" fossil a couple of miles from the site. The attraction funded their digs, and the digs gave the attraction its exhibits.
The park has been open for about fifteen years when the game takes place. It is past its prime. The interstate diverted traffic, the crowds thinned and the maintenance slipped. The museum is still impressive; the backstage areas are not. That contrast is the game's visual thesis: the public face is a celebration of dinosaurs, and the private face is a working scientific site that found something it could not explain.
The game takes place on September 19, 1992. There are no cell phones, no internet and no easy way to call for help. The isolation is period-accurate, not a plot hole.
The people
Dalton Coolidge is the park's founder and the game's absent guide. His tapes and notes are spread through the chapters, and Jordan retraces his route. Dalton is one step ahead for most of the game, leaving breadcrumbs rather than answers.
Elena Coolidge is Dalton's wife and co-founder. Her letters provide the family context: DJ's illness, the strain on the marriage and the decision to keep the park open while the dig continued.
DJ is Dalton and Elena's son. He disappeared before the game begins. The park's staff and the local authorities searched, but the search was limited by the park's size and the difficulty of the terrain.
Stella is a paleontologist and a longtime friend of the Coolidges. She is off-site when the game begins and reaches Jordan through a headset. She is the voice that keeps the player oriented and the reason Jordan has a goal beyond survival.
Dr. Fellows is the scientist whose body holds the key Jordan needs in the final chapter. Fellows is tied to the park's underground work and to the sabotage that traps people below.
Dennis is DJ's "imaginary friend," a Paleo Pal mascot and something else underground. The Dennis page covers the evidence and the theories.
The dig
The Coolidges' fossil site is the reason the park exists. The "duelling dinosaurs" find is the attraction's centerpiece and the justification for the museum. The dig also goes deeper than the public exhibits suggest.
The underground complex includes mining outposts, a gondola, flooded electrical rooms, a crew lift and caverns that were never part of the visitor route. The park's staff used the complex for excavation and, later, for containment. The Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 walkthroughs cover the areas.
The black biomass is the discovery that changed the site. It coats the deeper caverns, it changes living things and it is the reason the park's story turns from paleontology to something else. The game does not name it or explain its origin. It shows what it does.
The disappearance
DJ disappeared before the staff did. The letters suggest he was ill, that Dennis appeared around the same time, and that the family did not agree on what was happening. Dalton believed Dennis was real. Elena's letters are more guarded.
The staff vanished later. The park's public areas are abandoned mid-season: lights on, registers full, mascot suits left in storage. The underground areas show signs of a rushed evacuation and, in places, sabotage. Dr. Fellows is tied to the elevators and the lockdown.
Jordan arrives after both disappearances. His car dies on Route 66, he walks to the park, and Stella reaches him on the headset. From that point, the game is a search: for Dalton, for DJ and for a way out.
The search ends with DJ alive underground, Dennis as his caretaker and a Crew Lift ascent that is the game's final set piece. The ending explained page walks through it.
The timeline
The game does not give exact dates for everything, but the order is clear:
- The Coolidges discover the fossil and open the park.
- The park operates for about fifteen years; the interstate cuts into attendance.
- The dig expands underground; the crew finds the biomass.
- DJ begins talking about Dennis; his health declines.
- DJ disappears.
- The staff evacuates or is trapped; the elevators are sabotaged.
- Dalton goes looking and leaves tapes behind.
- Jordan arrives on September 19, 1992.
- Jordan finds DJ and escapes with him.
The gaps are deliberate. The game gives the player enough to reconstruct the order, not enough to explain every cause.
What the story is about
At its core, Terrible Lizards is a rescue story. Jordan is not a scientist, a soldier or a chosen one. He is a college student who cannot swim and who happens to be the only person who can help. The park's history is the obstacle, not the point.
The horror comes from the mismatch between the park's public story and its private one. Dalton's Dinos sells a friendly version of dinosaurs: mascots, cartoons, a museum with a rounded, educational tone. Underneath it, the same animals are real, the biomass is real and the mascots have become something else. The characters page covers the mascot lineup and the people behind it.

FAQ
Who is the villain? There is no single villain. Dr. Fellows' sabotage and the park's decisions create the situation, but the game does not give a mastermind.
Is Dalton dead? The game does not confirm it. Dalton's tapes and trail drive the middle chapters; the ending does not show him.
What is the black biomass? It is an underground substance that changes living things. The game shows its effects but does not name it or explain where it came from.
Why did the staff leave? The park was evacuated or overrun. The sabotage and the locked-down elevators suggest the exit was deliberately compromised.
Do the collectibles explain more? The tapes and notes add context to the Coolidges, the dig and DJ. The collectibles page lists the sets and the missable ones.
The story is built to be replayed. On a second run, the early rooms read differently: the signage is a cover story, the mascots are a warning and Dalton's cheerful tapes are a man trying to keep it together. The walkthrough hub is the place to start if you want to see it again with the ending in mind.
